Many people believe that human beings are basically good. The Pharisees and religious leaders in Jesus' time had all sorts of rules and religious rituals to try to keep themselves ritually clean in an effort to impress God with their piety.

Jesus' disciples come to him and ask him to explain what he meant when he told the Pharisees that it isn't what goes into a person that makes him dirty in God's eyes. "Don't you understand it either?" he says to them. "What goes into you goes into your mouth and then into your stomach, and eventually passes out of your body. It doesn't go into your heart.
The things that make a person dirty in God's eyes are in his/her heart. Things like........evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly and so on......
